What is it?
- This communicable disease may affect all ages and usually inflames the salivary glands of the neck and jaws. This infection is also capable of causing a form of encephalitis as well as producing infertility, especially in males. Approximately 1 in 10 children will also develop meningitis.
What causes it?
- Mumps is caused by a virus called Rubulavirus. The virus is spread through the air by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking
Possible symptoms
- Swelling of the cheeks and jaw, which is caused by inflammation in the salivary glands
- Fever
- Headache
What is the treatment?
- Mumps is preventable by keeping up to date with your child's immunizations
- Give foods that are easy to swallow
- Treat pain with analgesics such as ibuprofen and acephamines - remember NO ASPIRIN
- Keep your child away from others for at least 9 days after the symptoms begin

- You suspect your child has mumps Mumps is just one example of illnesses whose threat has been removed by properly administered immunizations.
