Highchair safety for toddlers
How safe is your child in the highchair? Here's some ideas on how to keep your child safe whilst dining.

Most accidents involving a highchair are due to a child falling because they have stood up in the chair or tried to climb out of it.

Follow these tips and make sure your meal times are safe.

  • Always supervise your child while in a highchair
  • Remember to buckle your child in with the restraints each and every time they're in it
  • The best type of restraint is one which is called a 'five-point harness."  Essentially, it has a strap over each shoulder, a crotch strap between the legs, and a belt around the tummy
  • If your highchair has wheels on it make sure that they are in the locked position when your child is in it
  • Does your highchair fold up? If so, make sure that it is stable and that the locks work well
  • When choosing a highchair check to see if it is made of durable material and is sturdy
  • Make sure that moveable parts on the chair can't trap small fingers, limbs, toes, or head
  • Look your highchair over carefully and see if there any sharp edges which may be potentially harmful to your child
  • If you need to leave the room take your child with you - never leave a child unsupervised in a highchair
  • Never allow your child to stand up as they can become unstable and tip over
  • Position the highchair away from electrical outlets, appliances, blinds, curtains, windows, and hot ovens
  • Place the highchair far enough away from walls and cupboards so that your child can't push against them and push the chair over
