Baby milestones - 9 month old
Here is a brief guide to what your baby is learning to do at 9 months.
Motor Development
- Your baby may start to use the thumb and forefinger together for the first time to grab objects. This is the continuation of the development of the pincer grip
- She enjoys putting objects and toys into containers and then pulling them back out again
- Your baby's busy fingers love toys with parts that move and turn
- She may start pulling up on furniture and stand for a brief period of time
Language and Intellectual Development
- Your baby will now listen intently to your conversations as her language continues to develop
- At this age babies often like to imitate coughing sounds
- Your baby may say "ma-ma" or "da-da"
- Her memory is working very well and when someone leaves the room she will anticipate their return by watching intently for them
- She pays very close attention when her name is being said. Also focuses on family names like mommy and daddy
Social and Emotional Development
- Your baby will love to play peek-a-boo with familiar people - this is a great game for helping your baby cope with separation anxiety, as it teaches her that mommy or daddy go away but then they come back again.
- If your baby does something and you show them enthusiasm by clapping - your baby may do it again!
- Babies at this age are becoming aware of the emotions in other people. Your baby may cry when another baby cries
- Sleep time can become a bit tricky at this age as your baby may experience some anxiety about separating from you for the night.
