Diarrhea
To say the least, diarrhea is a messy subject.
Small children may lose body fluid quickly when diarrhea persists. This may lead to dehydration Be alert to signs of dehydration.
Do remember, however most cases of diarrhea require only attention to diet, liquid intake and lots of clean diapers and hand washing!
For the parent of a young child, diarrhea is not only messy but a bit worrisome as well.
What causes it?
This malady occurs when something, most often a virus, irritates the intestinal tract causing the surface layer of the gut to secrete more fluid and absorb less food content. There are many causes other than viruses including food allergies, food intolerances and even eating too many high fibre foods. However, the good news is that most cases of diarrhea resolve quickly. Here are points to help when diarrhea happens.Symptoms:
- Cramping pains in the belly.
- Watery, sometimes explosive, frequent, foul smelling and messy stools.
- Increased thirst. Loss of appetite.
- Low grade (less than 102 F).
Treatment:
- Increase fluids such as fruit juices, kool aid, pedialyte, and popsicles.
- In contrast to previous thinking offering a regular diet as tolerated is alright.
- A warm (not hot) water bottle placed on the tummy often helps to relieve the cramping pain.
- Use anti-diarrheal medicine only on the advice of the doctor.
- Apply soothing ointment such as A and D to the bottom after each cleansing to alleviate irritation.
Call the Doctor when:
- Fever exceeds 102 F and/or persists.
- Stools have any blood or have a dark red “currant jelly” color.
- If abdominal pain is severe.
- Urine output is reduced rapidly or ceases.
- Stools are bright green in color.
- Vomiting also occurs, adding to the possibility of dehydration.
