How to tell if your newborn is too hot or cold
Young babies have a difficult time regulating their body temperature. As parents, it is our job to help our babies feel comfortable.

Here are some tips to help you monitor your young baby's temperature.
  • Become accustomed to feeling your baby’s hands or feet regularly to determine if they are too hot or too cold.
  • If you plan on taking your baby in and out of places with different temperatures, such as air-conditioned malls or parks on a sunny day, remember to take a light blanket with you just in case.
  • Young babies can also easily overheat – if your baby has come from a cold environment where he has been warmly dressed then into a warm one, remember to take off a layer or two of clothing.
  • A great deal of body heat is lost through a bare head, so make sure your baby wears a hat if she will be in a cold environment.
  • Babies born prematurely or who weigh less than eight pounds generally have less body fat to help keep them warm, so dress them accordingly.
  • Most babies like being wrapped in a blanket not only because it is warm, but also because it is comforting.
  • One other thing to always remember: never ever leave your baby alone in a car. That is a major recipe for disaster - hot cars are dangerous and even fatal to babies and young children.  Keep your cool as you keep your baby comfortable no matter how hot or cold they are!
