Well you've successfully established a bottle or breast feeding routine when all of a sudden you notice your baby just can't get enough of the white stuff! You may ask yourself what in the world is going on here!
The types of foods your baby eats will change over the next few months. Breast milk or infant formula is still the most important food for your growing baby. Sometime between six and eight months of age, your baby will be able to eat strained or mashed fruits and vegetables in addition to infant cereal.
You can tell when she is ready. She will show interest by leaning forward and opening her mouth. Her teeth may begin to appear. She needs to be able to sit up and hold her head steady in order to avoid choking.
Your little one may be ready for her first food! Wow - what a monumental moment. Get the video camera ready to record this one. Here are three major signs that your baby will display when she is ready for first foods.
1. Tongue Reflex
You may ask yourself what is a tongue reflex? Well it's a reflex babies are born with that prevents them from choking on objects. Essentially it works to push out food or other foreign objects placed in the mouth. To test if your baby still has the tongue reflex, put a small amount of rice cereal in your babies mouth. If your baby continually pushes it out after several attempts, she probably still has it! You can see why it's important to wait until this disappears before you start feeding your baby solid food.
2. Head Support
In order for a baby to feed on solid food they need to be able to support their own head. To be able to eat solid food a baby needs to be able sit up and have good neck control.
3.Grass is greener on the other side
A baby who is six months old and is staring and staring at your food and is grabbing at it during lunch is definitely ready to try solid food!
If your baby is showing these signs and is around 6 months of age, then she is probably ready to attempt solid food. Good luck!
