Milestones - kindergartner - 5 years old
Here is a guide to how your 5 year old is learning and growing over this year.
Motor Development
- May be to able to walk down stairs with alternating feet
- Enjoys learning how to catch a medium to large size ball
- Gains enjoyment from drawing and writing
- Holds a strong preference for using one hand more than the other
- Becomes interested in writing letters and numbers. Accept that your child's writing is just starting and expect messy writing. It is normal for letters to be reversed at this stage
Intellectual Development
- Has a growing awareness of rules and of using manners
- Enjoys getting to know the numbers from 1-10
- May occasionally skip an object when counting them
- Begins to actively solve space problems such as doing puzzles
- Understands the concepts of space and can correctly use words such as behind, on top of and beside
- Enjoys comparing the size of a variety of objects using terms that refer to volume (full), size (bigger), and distance
- Shows an interest in collecting items and organizing them in different ways
- Expresses an interest in understanding the four seasons
Language Development
- Can accurately describe a sequence of events
- May have a vocabulary of approximately 3000 words
- Can use this large vocabulary to explain to you how they would solve a particular problem
- Loves to be silly and make up silly songs and stories
- Gains confidence in trying to use quite large words
- Uses words to tell you how she feels
- Enjoys looking at books by herself and with you
Social and Emotional Development
- Expresses a sense of pride in self
- Develops strong friendships with a few select children
- Still needs the comfort of a regular routine and rules
- Expresses a desire to be competitive. When playing games, emphasize the enjoyment of playing just for fun - not for winning!
